Comet Astroblast DIY Costume Guide

Comet’s design in Astroblast! merges a classic retro sci-fi astronaut aesthetic with clean, friendly cartoon animal features. Recreating the character in real life centers on three primary colors: royal blue for the space suit, bright red for the gloves and accents, and clean white for the boots and underlayers.

Because the source material is a stylized animated series, the challenge lies in translating flat 2D shapes into wearable garments without overcomplicating the build. Focusing on clean color blocking and comfortable base pieces keeps the silhouette recognizable while allowing full mobility.

Choosing and Prepping the Astronaut Suit

A standard royal blue flight suit or space jumpsuit forms the centerpiece of the costume. Commercial astronaut suits generally come with pre-sewn space agency patches on the chest and shoulders. Since Comet wears an unbranded, stylized suit, taking a seam ripper to remove NASA or American flag emblems leaves you with a much cleaner canvas that matches the animated design. If removing the patches leaves needle holes or adhesive residue, covering those spots with small pieces of matching blue twill tape or plain blue fabric patches resolves the issue cleanly.

Fit is another important factor when selecting your suit. Flight suits often have a straight, utilitarian cut with little stretch. If you plan to wear an extra layer underneath, size up slightly to accommodate the fabric around the shoulders and chest. Elastic bands at the cuffs and ankles help bundle any excess pant length, creating the slight puffed look typical of cartoon space gear.

Layering the White Sweater

Visible at the collar of the jumpsuit is Comet’s white underlayer. A basic white crewneck sweater or knit pullover worn directly beneath the flight suit fills in the open neckline and adds depth to the outfit. Fold the suit collar flat so the ribbed collar of the sweater stays visible around the neck.

For indoor conventions or warmer weather, a heavy knit can become uncomfortable quickly under synthetic jumpsuit fabric. In those situations, swap the heavy sweater for a lightweight white mock-neck shirt or a simple cotton long-sleeve tee. You maintain the same graphic white neckline without trapping unnecessary heat.

Canine Features and Face Paint

Transforming from a standard astronaut into Comet requires his canine ears, tail, and facial markings. A headband with soft dog ears provides the right dropped silhouette beside the face. If the headband feels loose or tends to slip forward when moving, sewing small hair clips or bobby pin loops to the underside of the band anchors it securely into your hair.

Do not pin the tail directly through a single layer of jumpsuit fabric, which can cause tearing over time. Instead, thread an interior belt around your waist beneath the jumpsuit, create a small reinforced opening along the back seam, and clip the tail directly to the belt. This distributes the weight and keeps the tail from drooping awkwardly.

A round black clown nose provides the bulbous, cartoon dog snout. If the nose comes with a thin clear elastic cord, you can hide the strap under your wig or ear headband. For the red markings on the face, use water-activated red face paint applied with a dense makeup sponge. Stipple the color evenly across the designated areas, then dust the edges with translucent setting powder to stop the pigment from rubbing off onto the white collar of your sweater.

Gloves and Footwear

Solid red gloves give the hands the bright, exaggerated cartoon contrast seen on screen. Simple cotton or stretch spandex gloves work well because they fit smoothly against the fingers without adding bulk. Pull the sleeves of the blue flight suit over the wrists of the gloves so the red starts sharply at the cuff.

Finish the costume with a pair of mid-calf white boots. Go-go boots or retro-style moon boots fit the space aesthetic nicely. Tuck the cuffs of the jumpsuit directly into the boot shafts, letting the fabric blouse out slightly above the rim to complete the puffy astronaut silhouette.
