Astrid Hofferson’s Viking warrior outfit is built on rugged, practical layers: a fitted sleeveless tunic underneath a cropped reddish vest, an armored battle skirt over a neutral underskirt, and weathered leather armor across the shoulders and legs. Her signature silhouette balances functional fighting gear with distinct Berk styling, anchored by heavy fur trims and metal studs.
Putting this costume together without building leather armor from scratch comes down to stacking the right readymade garments. By pairing utility clothing with medieval and gladiator costume accents, you can assemble her battle-ready look cleanly while keeping the entire outfit comfortable enough to wear all day.
Layering the Top and Vest
Start with the aqua camisole as your base. Astrid wears a dusty teal-blue sleeveless tunic tucked securely into her waistband. The tank gives you the exact neckline and color contrast needed underneath her outer layers without adding unwanted bulk around the midsection.
Over the camisole, add the red bolero vest. Astrid’s cropped outer layer sits just under the bust and frames her shoulders. If the bolero is slightly bright out of the package, a light wash of watered-down brown acrylic paint brushed along the seams will age the fabric and match the weathered tone of Berk’s dragon riders.
The Battle Skirt and Lower Body
Astrid’s skirt has two distinct tiers. The base layer is a simple beige skater skirt, which mimics the pale linen hem peeking out beneath her armor. Wear it high at the natural waist so it falls just above the knees.
Cinch the Roman war skirt directly over the beige skirt. The leather-style hanging straps replicate Astrid’s studded battle skirt. If you want extra screen accuracy, you can glue small decorative silver spikes or skull cabochons to the bottom of each strap using contact cement, though the raw studded straps work well on their own.
For the legs, pull on the brown leggings under the skirts. They provide full coverage and serve as the backdrop for the brown knee pads. Slide the knee guards over the leggings so they rest directly over your kneecaps, breaking up the leg line just like Astrid’s stitched leather guards.
Shoulder Armor and Arm Guards
Astrid wears round, spiked pauldrons strapped over her shoulders. The brown shoulder gauntlets strap around the upper arms and sit right at the shoulder cap. Position them snugly so they do not slide down when you move your arms, or pin the upper straps directly into the shoulders of the red bolero to hold them steady.
Her hands and wrists stay protected with the brown fur fingerless gloves. The exposed fingers let you easily handle props, phone screens, or convention badges without constantly stripping off your gear.
Hair, Headband, and Boots
Astrid’s hair is one of her most distinct visual traits. The blond braided wig features her thick side braid pulled over one shoulder, complete with the heavy side-swept fringe hanging over one eye. Shake the wig out before wearing, lightly tease the roots at the crown for Viking volume, and trim the front bangs slightly if they block too much of your vision.
Place the brown leather head band directly over the wig, resting it horizontally across the middle of your forehead rather than up into your hairline. Astrid wears hers low to hold her messy bangs in place.
Finish the outfit with the brown fur-trimmed boots. Astrid’s boots are heavy, flat-soled leather with prominent fur cuffs at the calves. Tuck the leggings straight into the boots to maintain a seamless, rugged profile from hip to toe.
