Custard’s design in The Save-Ums! is built around bold, saturated blocks of color. As the team’s purple feline tech expert, his outfit functions like a full-coverage hero suit paired with a contrasting red eye mask and cat ears. Because the original animation style is smooth and minimalist, recreating the look in real life relies on clean lines, smooth fabric tension, and neat placement of the accent pieces rather than intricate tailoring.
Translating a rounded CGI character into a wearable human costume means focusing on how the pieces sit together. You need a solid purple foundation, a comfortable way to integrate the ears through or over the hood, and crisp detailing for the face and chest emblems.
The Purple Base Suit
A full-body Purple Hooded Bodysuit serves as the entire foundation for the outfit. Spandex or stretch polyester works well here because it eliminates visible seams between separate tops and bottoms, keeping the clean silhouette of the cartoon intact. If you choose a suit with an attached hood, test the neckline and hood tension before attaching any accessories. You want the hood snug around your forehead and jawline so it stays put when you turn your head, but flexible enough to wear a headband underneath or slit small openings for ear attachments.
Constructing the Cat Ears and Headpiece
Custard’s feline ears are rounded triangles with blue contrast on the inner surfaces. A Purple Cat Ear Headband provides the necessary structural base. Rather than leaving the ears plain purple, cut triangular inserts out of Blue Felt Pieces to match the character’s secondary color accents. Felt holds its shape well, and the raw edges will not fray once trimmed, giving you crisp borders without sewing.
To assemble the ears, warm up a Mini Glue Gun and apply a thin perimeter of hot adhesive along the back of each felt cutout, pressing firmly onto the front surface of each ear. If you prefer to wear the headband under your bodysuit hood, cut two small, reinforced vertical slits directly through the hood fabric at the crown of your head. Slip the ears through from the inside out so the headband rests flat against your hair while the ears emerge cleanly from the fabric.
The Red Mask and Eye Placement
The boldest focal point of Custard’s face is his bright Red Face Mask. In the animated series, the mask wraps across the bridge of the nose and over the eye sockets, standing out sharply against the purple head. When wearing a mask over a fabric hood, elastic straps can sometimes pull the hood out of alignment. Securing the mask directly to the hood with discreet fabric snaps or small strips of hook-and-loop fastener helps it sit flush against your face without sliding downward during movement.
Chest Emblems and Fabric Accents
Custard features distinct blue markings on his torso. You can draft these shapes on paper first to check the scale against your own chest before cutting into fabric. Once you are satisfied with the proportions, transfer the templates onto Blue Felt Pieces and cut them cleanly with sharp scissors.
Stretching the bodysuit slightly over a piece of cardboard before gluing prevents the torso fabric from puckering when you put it on. Use the Mini Glue Gun to adhere the felt patches in place, working in small sections so the adhesive does not cool prematurely. If any purple base edges require touch-ups or if you want to define bordering lines, Purple Fabric Paint lets you blend seams and clean up transitions smoothly across the stretch fabric.
Footwear and Mobility Practicalities
Because standard bodysuits often cover the feet with slippery stretch fabric, walking across slick convention floors requires practical adjustments. Slipping low-profile purple slip-ons or ballet flats inside the suit, or adding non-slip silicone traction dots to the soles, keeps you grounded while preserving the head-to-toe purple coverage. Keep an eye on hand dexterity as well; if your suit has closed gloves, adding a small opening along the inner wrist seam allows you to free your hands without stripping down the full outfit.
