DIY Hillbilly Jim Costume Guide

Hillbilly Jim’s ring gear is built around working-class denim, heavy facial hair, and rural accessories straight out of 1980s WWF broadcasts. He wrestled shirtless under heavy denim bibs, topped off with a floppy brown fisherman’s hat, a real horseshoe dangling from a heavy chain, and athletic trainer‘s tape wrapped around both wrists.

Because the outfit relies on functional workwear rather than tailored superhero spandex, getting the appearance right comes down to garment proportions, realistic weathering, and handling the weight of the metal accessories comfortably throughout a convention.

Denim Bib Overalls

The centerpiece of the entire build is a pair of classic dark or medium-wash work overalls. Liberty Denim Bib Overalls match the traditional cut Jim wore during his entrance and matches, featuring sturdy denim, a wide bib pocket, and metal clasps. In the ring, he wore them with nothing underneath, though slipping on a sleeveless tank or undershirt provides an easy alternative if you prefer torso coverage. Sizing up slightly gives the denim a looser, relaxed drape through the legs and waist, mimicking how classic wrestling gear sat on heavyweight physiques.

Hat, Bandana, and Hair

Up top, Jim wore an unstructured brown bucket-style fisherman’s hat alongside a bright neck bandana and an unruly mass of hair. The Decky Fisherman’s Hat in Brown provides the right sloped brim and rounded crown. You can pinch the crown or turn the brim down slightly to give it a relaxed, broken-in shape rather than stiff retail fabric.

Tied around the neck is a Paisley Cotton Bandana in Red. Fold it into a band before tying the knot at the side or back of the neck so the patterned cotton rests flat against the collarbone without slipping inside the front of the overalls.

A full, unkempt beard and shoulder-length brown curls define his head sculpt. The Caveman Beard and Wig Set covers both elements simultaneously. The dark, shaggy curls match his wild mane, but running your fingers or a wide-tooth comb through the synthetic hair helps fluff the beard outward so it frames the lower jaw without matting flat against your chest.

The Horseshoe Necklace and Taped Wrists

Jim’s most recognizable prop was the full-sized lucky horseshoe worn like an oversized pendant. Threading a Straight Link Chain through the nail holes of a Rustic Stamped Iron Horseshoe recreates the piece faithfully. Because solid iron carries genuine weight, check that the chain links sit comfortably against the back of your neck, and adjust the overall length so the horseshoe hangs around mid-chest where it won’t repeatedly collide with the metal bib buttons when walking.

For the hands, Ringside 1″ Trainer’s Tape completes the wrestler presentation. Wrap the white tape several times around each wrist, anchoring just below the base of the palm and extending two or three inches down the forearm. Taping the wrists securely gives the arms an authentic ring-ready appearance without requiring gloves or complex leather wraps.

Footwear and Practical Details

Jim wrestled barefoot on television, which was a memorable character trademark but completely impractical for walking convention center floors. Pairing the overalls with plain dark work boots or basic brown leather shoes protects your feet while fitting naturally into the rural aesthetic. Keep the pant cuffs rolled slightly or let the heavy denim hem pool naturally over the boot tops to maintain the relaxed 1980s silhouette.
