Inspector Spacetime and his loyal companion Constable Reggie rely on an eccentric mix of mid-century British formalwear, vintage loungewear, and police uniform staples. The humor and charm of the duo come from how homemade and distinctly low-budget their serial-style wardrobe appears, making both outfits straightforward to assemble from everyday garments and simple modifications.
Because this is a paired costume, the visual contrast between the two silhouettes does most of the heavy lifting. The Inspector pairs an oversized white bathrobe with formal neckwear and white gloves, while Constable Reggie wears a structured, button-front navy sweater topped with a bowler hat and traditional British bobby accessories.
Assembling Inspector Spacetime
The Inspector’s outfit centers on an unexpected outer layer: a plush White Men’s Bathrobe worn wide open over tailored clothing. A crisp White Dress Shirt forms the clean base underneath. Leaving the top button unfastened creates enough space to nest the Patterned Red Ascot directly against the neck, giving him an eccentric academic appearance.
Tying the ascot correctly requires folding the wide ends over each other like an informal cravat, then tucking both tails inside the shirt placket so the patterned silk puffs out slightly above the collar. For the hands, plain White Gloves keep the silhouette formal and slightly theatrical. Any standard pair of dark trousers and brown or black leather dress shoes will ground the bottom half.
Building Constable Reggie
Constable Reggie’s uniform draws directly from traditional British police dress, built around a solid Long Sleeve Navy Blue Sweater. A standard crewneck sweater establishes the right base color and shape, but adding Round Silver Buttons down the front or along the cuffs transforms it from casual knitwear into a convincing period tunic.
To attach the silver buttons without pulling on the sweater knit, lay the garment flat and mark even intervals down the center. Stitching small squares of scrap fabric or felt on the inside of the knit gives the thread a sturdy base so the buttons stay upright rather than flopping downward.
The headwear defines the character immediately. A stiff Black Derby Hat should sit straight on the head rather than tilted. Pin the Police Badge high on the left breast of the sweater, placing a folded index card or piece of craft foam behind the knit to prevent the metal pin from stretching the wool. Finally, hang the Police Whistle from a lanyard around the neck or slip it into a pocket with the chain visible.
Fit and Pair Dynamics
Proportions make a noticeable difference when both characters stand side by side. The Inspector’s bathrobe should fall past the knees to create movement when walking, whereas Reggie’s sweater should fit neatly through the shoulders and torso to reflect a disciplined, military-inspired posture.
