Jeffrey Goines divides his screen time between institutional confinement and chaotic street activism, giving cosplayers two distinct ways to approach the character. In the psychiatric hospital, his wardrobe consists of mismatched patient wear, while his post-release look trades faded medical cotton for a beige tracksuit, eccentric two-tone footwear, and activist branding.
Recreating either version comes down to nailing the balance between disheveled institutional wear and intentional eccentricity. Because these garments are relatively simple in cut, aging the fabrics, adjusting the fit, and executing the graphics properly make the difference.
The Mental Ward Wardrobe
For Goines’s introductory scenes, the core layer is a hospital gown worn loosely over patterned bottoms. A standard pale blue or patterned hospital gown provides the base, but fresh fabric straight from the package looks far too clean for a run-down psychiatric facility. Washing the gown with a small amount of tea or diluted dark dye creates a lived-in, dingy patina that matches the grimy visual tone of the film’s asylum sets.
Pair the gown with loose, printed sleepwear rather than plain sweatpants. Geometric print pajama bottoms echo the disorienting, mismatched institutional garments issued to ward residents. Jeffrey wears his gown untied or loosely fastened behind the neck, letting the sleep pants bunch naturally over bare ankles or basic canvas plimsolls.
The Activist Tracksuit
Once Jeffrey takes charge of the Army of the Twelve Monkeys outside the asylum, his signature piece becomes a matching tan athletic suit. A tan track jacket paired with matching tan track pants gives you the foundation for his manic public appearance. Pick lightweight polyester or nylon blends with a relaxed cut, allowing the fabric to drape loosely during erratic movements rather than looking modern and athletic.
The defining element of this outfit is the twelve-monkey spiral emblem. Using red fabric paint and a simple stencil, apply the insignia onto the back or chest of the jacket. Thinning the paint slightly with a splash of water lets it soak directly into the weave, yielding the rough look of guerrilla street-graffiti rather than a clean commercial print.
Footwear and Hair Styling
Rather than wearing athletic sneakers with his tracksuit, Goines opts for jarring contrast. Red and white wing tip shoes clash deliberately with the casual track fabric, emphasizing his wealthy background and unstable taste. Stiff leather dress shoes can punish your feet during long hours on convention floors, so gently flexing the soles by hand before an event will save you significant discomfort.
Jeffrey’s hair is short, choppy, and permanently disheveled from nervous tics and sweat. Working a small amount of matte hair clay or pomade backward through damp hair creates that unkempt, textured look without drying into stiff or shiny spikes.
