Luna’s outfit is built around bold primary colors and clean animated shapes: a sleeveless navy dress, a pleated red skirt, an oversized belt, and tall black boots. The styling relies on solid color blocking and distinct proportions rather than intricate seams or tailoring.
Because the character comes from a 2D animated series, getting the look right comes down to how the layers overlap. The red skirt hem needs to peek out cleanly beneath the blue dress to create the two-tiered silhouette seen on screen.
Layering the Dress and Skirt
The core of the outfit is the contrast between the dark blue top layer and the bright red lower tier. A simple A-line or shift-style blue sleeveless dress worn over a flared red skirt recreates that shape directly. If the blue dress falls too long, it completely covers the red fabric, so aim for the dress hem to end three to four inches above the skirt’s bottom edge. A strip of iron-on hem tape or a quick straight stitch can shorten the dress hem cleanly without altering the neckline or armholes.
Fabric choice makes a noticeable difference in how comfortably the two pieces sit together. A lightweight cotton or jersey dress won’t feel bulky resting over the elastic waistband of a skater skirt. If the skirt waistband creates a visible ridge under the dress, pull it slightly higher toward your natural waist so the gathers sit flat against your ribcage.
Cinching with the Red Belt
Luna wears a wide red belt with a prominent gold buckle directly over the dress. This serves as the visual dividing line between the blue bodice and the flared red skirt. Fasten the belt right over the transition where the dress overlaps the skirt waist, which defines the cartoon proportions and keeps the underlying layers tidy.
Smooth dress fabrics can sometimes cause a wide belt to slip or spin during normal movement. Tucking two small safety pins through the belt back into the dress fabric or adding small strips of double-sided apparel tape will hold the buckle centered throughout the day.
Footwear and Legwear
Black knee-high boots ground the lower half of the costume and balance out the saturated colors above. Flat or low-heeled riding-style boots match the animated design well while remaining comfortable for standing and walking at events.
If the boot shafts fit loosely, pair them with dark calf socks to prevent the leather from sagging around your ankles. Depending on the venue and temperature, you can go with bare legs or wear opaque white tights for extra coverage.
Styling the Pigtails
Luna’s hairstyle features two high pigtails gathered with red hair ties. Part your hair straight down the middle and position the ties high on the sides of the crown. Backcombing the pigtails gently gives them the rounded, buoyant volume seen in the show. If you’re styling a synthetic wig, choose a skin-top wig with a pre-split back or one designed for high bunches to keep the wefts hidden.
