DIY Nacho Libre Costume Guide

Ignacio’s ring gear in Nacho Libre is straightforward, but getting the look right comes down to the color contrast and the fit of a few very specific pieces. The entire outfit relies on bright sky blue paired against bold, saturated red, with zero shirts or extra armor to hide behind.

Because it’s a classic lucha libre design, you’re essentially building a wrestling kit: tights, briefs, a lace-up mask, knee protection, and boots. Since you’re dealing with form-fitting layers and exposed skin, prioritizing comfortable fabrics and secure closures will save you a lot of hassle during a long day of wearing it.

The Mask and Facial Hair

The mask is the core identifier of the character. Traditional Mexican wrestling masks lace up tightly at the back of the head rather than using velcro or zippers, which lets you adjust the tension around your jaw and brow. If your mask has open eye and mouth ports, you’ll need room for your natural hair and facial hair to show through. Ignacio sports a distinctive thick mustache and curly brown hair that spills out around the neck and ear openings, so don’t tuck your hair completely away if you can help it.

If you don’t naturally have the mustache, an inexpensive theatrical crepe wool mustache or a synthetic adhesive strip applied with spirit gum works much better than drawing one on with makeup, especially since sweat under a wrestling mask quickly breaks down liquid cosmetics.

The Cape

Nacho’s cape is bright red with a structured collar that frames the back of the neck. The collar needs enough body to stand up or fold back neatly instead of flopping flat against your shoulders. If your cape’s collar feels too flimsy out of the package, you can run a quick line of medium-weight fusible interfacing inside the seam or tack a piece of craft wire along the neckline to give it shape.

Pay attention to how the cape fastens. Traditional ties around the neck can dig in after a couple of hours. A practical modification is sewing heavy-duty snaps or a discreet hook-and-eye closure directly to the collar band, or attaching hidden safety pins to the underside of the collar so the weight rests across your upper traps rather than pulling on your throat.

Tights and Briefs

The bottom layer consists of bright sky-blue footless tights worn under shiny red briefs. Finding the right shade of blue matters here; aim for a light, dusty turquoise or clear sky blue rather than royal blue or navy. Footless microfiber tights are ideal because they sit smoothly around the ankles without bunching inside your boots, and they tend to offer better opacity than sheer dance hose.

For the briefs, a high-waisted cut in a slick tricot or satin finish gives that authentic retro ring look. Wear a nude athletic compression short or seamless dance belt underneath the blue tights before pulling the red briefs on top. This smooths out underwear lines, keeps everything firmly supported, and prevents the lighter blue fabric from showing through under convention lighting.

Boots and Knee Pads

The lower legs are anchored by red wrestling knee pads slipped directly over the blue tights. Standard gel or foam wrestling pads stay in place best if the elastic bands grip snugly at the top of the calf and lower thigh. If they slide down while walking, a strip of double-sided toupee tape or silicone grip elastic tacked inside the top band will keep them locked in position.

Finish the footwear with high-top red lace-up boots. While purpose-built wrestling boots have thin soles designed strictly for canvas mats, standard red leather boots or combat-style lace-ups handle pavement and convention floors far better. Ensure the boots lace high enough on the calf to meet the bottom hem of your knee pads, leaving just a narrow band of blue tights showing in between.
